Fescom demands state policy for senior citizens

TNN Aug 14, 2010, 12.34am IST

FESCOM PUNE VIBHAG
fescom pune vibhag president Mr. Rode said,
PUNE: The Federation of senior citizens' organisations of Maharashtra (Fescom) on Thursday announced that it would intensify its agitation for a state-level policy for senior citizens, on the lines of the National policy for older persons, announced by the Union government in 1999.
Arun Rode of Fescom, Pune region, claimed that the state government had failed to frame a policy, despite an order from the Central government to this effect.

Fescom plans to take out a silent march from Nanawada in Budhwar Peth to the district collector's office on August 16, pressing for its demand. The protests will continue till October, with a national-level convention of senior citizens being held in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, on October 27 and 28.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Rode said, "After announcing the national policy, the Central government told state governments to from a similar policy at state level, but the Maharashtra government has failed to act on the order. It shows the government's apathy towards senior citizens, who have contributed to the development of the state when they were young."
According to Rode, the Centre introduced The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, which was supposed to be replicated by state governments as per local laws. The state government published a gazette in 2009 and introduced rules and regulations on June 23, 2010, but is yet to appoint officials to implement it.
